MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team continued its unbeaten mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on Saturday in a 9-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College. The Eagles have two more league matches to go, including another big bout versus rival College of St. Scholastica next Saturday, April 25.
Match ResultsBefore the match even started, Northwestern found itself leading 3-0 thanks to defaults by the Vikings at Nos. 5 and 6 singles as well as No. 3 doubles. Most of the remaining six matches didn't challenge the Eagles much, although
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) and
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) did see their No. 2 doubles opponents, Alicia Kranz and Taylor Nordhausen, win four games in what was an 8-4 final.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) and
Birdie Bardwell (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) both claimed 6-0, 6-0 victories in their Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches, bumping Moe up to 19 singles wins this season – three shy of her program record 22 from 2014.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Rachel Rosemore at No. 1 singles, while Bostrom took care of business at No. 4 singles, defeating Justine Bennett 6-1, 6-1.
The win is UNW's third straight, improving the Eagles' overall record to 11-8. While the Northwestern men's team will have a relatively stress-free (and match free) week, the women's squad will be busy with matches on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday of next week. Northwestern will face Wisconsin-River Falls on Monday the 20th at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn. with the match slated for a 5 p.m. start.
