ST. PAUL – Despite not having their usual No. 1 singles player on the court, the University of Northwestern women's tennis team had little trouble with North Central University on Monday night, defeating the Rams 9-0. With
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) forced to sit out a match due to playing in the ITA regional tournament in September, UNW upped everyone in its lineup with all nine matches going the Eagles' way.
Match ResultsKaren Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ), Johnson's usual No. 1 doubles partner, teamed up with
Birdie Bardwell (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) in a quick 8-0 victory over the Rams' Amber Wolff and Kristen Furry.
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen)'s No. 2 doubles match nearly went the same way as they defeated NCU's Sarah Trickey and Hope Carlson 8-2.
Courtney Lawlor (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Katie Olson (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) were slotted at No. 3 doubles for Northwestern and were 8-4 victors against Lisa Fichtner and Hannah Hein.
Moe, Bardwell, and Lapinski all won one of their Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles sets in 6-0 fashion as Northwestern dominated the 1-4 bouts. Lawlor played at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win over Trickey while Olson hung on for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory against Lauren Cox at No. 6.
The win improves Northwestern to 9-8 while the Eagles remain undefeated in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play at 4-0. UNW will be back in action with an end-loaded week ahead as the Eagles are scheduled to host Martin Luther College on Friday before heading to Mankato, Minn. for a match against Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday.
