ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team improved to 3-2 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with an 8-1 victory over North Central University on Monday night. UNW received convincing wins from its top two players in both singles and doubles play in a match that went deep into the night hours under the lights at the Johnson Tennis Complex on campus.
Match ResultsNorthwestern's No. 1 doubles team of
CJ Lloyd (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Brett Jacobus (Lakeville, Minn. /Lakeville North) rolled over North Central's Bird brothers – Ian and Alex – in an 8-1 finish.
Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and
Joshua Kimball (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) followed suit with a victory of their own at No. 2 doubles as they defeated the Rams' Shane Christensen and Joshua Lee 8-6.
Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Nathan Elias (St. Anthony Village, Minn. /St. Anthony) needed some extra time, but were able to get over the hump with a 9-8 (7-3) No. 3 win against Aaron Cooke and Sutton Rehwaldt to give UNW a 3-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Lloyd had little difficulty in his No. 1 singles match against Ian Bird, winning 6-2, 6-2, while Jacobus was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Christensen at No. 2 singles. In what was perhaps the most entertaining contest of the night, Grasto and Alex Bird took their third set tiebreaker to extra lengths before Grasto ultimately won the match in comeback fashion 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (15-13).
Both Kimball and
Tanner Magruder (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) were winners in their Nos. 4 and 5 singles matches as well to account for the Eagles' final two points of the night.
The victory bumps Northwestern to a 5-12 overall record with three more matches yet to play this week, all of which count towards the Eagles' UMAC record. First up is a Friday, April 17 bout at home against Martin Luther College, a match that is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
