ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team split a pair of Saturday matches, defeating Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) foe University of Minnesota Morris 8-1 before falling to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a 9-0 count.

UNW came out strong against the Cougars from Morris, winning all but the No. 2 doubles match. Both Nos. 1 and 3 doubles bouts were 8-3 victories for the Eagles, who owned a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
From a numbers standpoint, No. 1 singles player
CJ Lloyd (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) had the best match in his 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Michael Maudal. Both
Joshua Kimball (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) and
Tanner Magruder (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) also earned a sweep in one of their sets. Kimball was a 6-0, 6-4 winner against the Cougars' Jordan McCall, while Magruder defeated Calvin Cicha 6-0, 6-3.
In the late match against the Eagles from La Crosse, UNW couldn't put together enough games to win a match in what was a 9-0 defeat, Lloyd and his No. 1 doubles partner
Brett Jacobus (Lakeville, Minn. /Lakeville North) put up an 8-5 fight in their match, with
Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and Kimball getting three games in their No. 2 doubles bout.
Jacobus had the best singles contest, but still fell to No. 2 opponent Austin Stefanich 6-4, 6-2.
Northwestern, now 4-12 overall on the year, returns to its home courts on Monday of next week to host North Central University in another UMAC matchup. Monday's scheduled start time is 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson Tennis Complex on campus.
