ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern didn't need much time to hand Bethany Lutheran College a 9-0 defeat on Friday night as the Eagles squad yielded just four games to the Vikings throughout three doubles matches and six singles bouts. The victory improves UNW to 8-7 overall on the season while keeping Northwestern's unbeaten streak alive in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) at 3-0.
Match ResultsTwo of the Eagles' four points that were surrendered came in doubles action as Northwestern won by a combined 24-2. UNW's Nos. 1 and 3 doubles pairs swept their Bethany Lutheran opponents, while
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) were 8-2 winners over Taylor Nordhausen and Alicia Kranz.
Four of Friday night's singles matches were won in 6-0, 6-0 fashion, with
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ),
Birdie Bardwell (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville),
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen), and
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) all blanking their Nos. 2, 3, 5, and 6 counterparts from the Vikings.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) defeated Rachel Rosemore 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Bostrom was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over her No. 4 singles opponent Justine Bennett.
Northwestern will play at least one match on Saturday, April 11, with the remaining part of the day still unsolidified as of Friday evening. UMAC foe Minnesota Morris was forced to cancel its 9 a.m. contest against UNW, but the Purple and Gold will face the other Eagles – from Wisconsin-La Crosse either late Saturday morning or early in the afternoon at Lifetime Fitness in Fridley, Minn.
