MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern didn't need much time to earn its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) victory of the 2015 season as the Eagles took care of North Central University with a 9-0 sweep in two hours on Monday afternoon. Amidst nine combined doubles and singles matches, UNW yielded a mere three games to the Rams.
All three of Northwestern's doubles teams swept their competition in 8-0 fashion, led by the undefeated duo of
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) in the No. 1 slot.
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) followed suite at No. 2 doubles, as did
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Courtney Lawlor (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) at No. 3.
In addition to her doubles match with Matetich, Lawlor saw her first singles action of the season as the sophomore defeated North Central's Mary Metzger 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. Lapinski and Matetich played up a spot in the lineup, with both leaving the Baseline Tennis Center with 6-0, 6-0 victories in hand.
Now 2-1 on the year, Northwestern will resume its schedule on Saturday with a pair of matches against Northwestern College of Iowa and the University of St. Thomas. Both matches, at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., will be in the Tommies' Anderson Recreation Complex in St. Paul.
