WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern's first win of the 2015 season mattered on Friday as the Eagles opened their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule with a 6-3 victory over North Central University. UNW took five of the six singles matches in the evening affair at Lifetime Fitness.
Match ResultsIt was North Central who was ahead after doubles action, winning two of those three contests. Only the Eagles' No. 1 pair of
CJ Lloyd (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Brett Jacobus (Lakeville, Minn. /Lakeville North) won their match, defeating the Rams' Shane Christensen and Ian Bird 8-4. UNW's other two doubles teams both lost in 8-5 fashion.
Northwestern quickly took control in singles action, evening the overall match score right away with the No. 1 singles match, where Lloyd defeated Christensen 6-2, 6-1. Jacobus wasn't too far behind his teammate at No. 2 singles, handing Bird a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.
Joshua Kimball (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) joined Lloyd in winning his first collegiate match on Friday. Kimball's 6-1, 6-1 victory against Alex Bird was good for Northwestern's fourth point of the night before
Cole Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and
Tanner Magruder (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) notched points Nos. 5 and 6 with their 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 singles wins.
UNW has over a week to prepare for its next match, a Tuesday night nonconference bout against the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul on February 24. That match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
