Menomonie, Wis. – The University of Northwestern won a tight battle at the University of Wisconsin- Stout Tuesday night with a final score of 66-63 in the Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout led by six points with 46 seconds before halftime, but an
Aaron Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) three-pointer narrowed the gap in the last 10 seconds of play, as the Blue Devils held the 29-26 advantage after the first half.
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) brought Northwestern to a game high lead of 12 points with eight minutes remaining in the game. UWST continued to strive forward, lessening their deficit to a mere three points, but with an open shot from downtown in the final seconds of play, Stout fell 66-63 with a missed buzzer beater opportunity.
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School),
Aaron Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area), and
Clay Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) all led with 12 points apiece, with
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) closely following with 10. Youngberg was tonight's stand out, shooting 4-4 behind the arc. The 6-4 forward recorded his career best night at the Johnson Fieldhouse.
Northwestern edged out Stout, shooting 46.4 percent from downtown and 43.4 percent in the field. The Eagles had twice as many turnovers as the Blue Devils with a total of 12, but managed to hold off the home team with the close win.
Northwestern will have a 17 day hiatus before the next game on Saturday, January 2nd as the Eagles host North Central University at 3 p.m. at the Ericksen Center. UNW stands at an 10-1 overall record, 3-0 in conference, going into Christmas break.
