Hot-Shooting Eagles Cruise to 106-69 Win Over Storm

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team shot a season-high 63.8 percent from the field en route to breaking the century mark in Friday's 106-69 conference win over visiting Crown College (1-7, 0-2) inside the Ericksen Center. The Eagles, who received contributions from each player who saw action, improve to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).

UNW scorched the nets for 52 points in the first half and followed that up with a 54-point second half. The Eagles shot a blistering 71 (22-of-31) percent from the field in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Eagles continued their balanced attack in 2015, as five players reached double figures in the victory. Senior Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led the charge with 16 points – 13 of those coming in the first half – on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) knocked three triples on his way to finishing with 13, while Peter Maring (Harris, Minn./Cambridge Christian) and Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) tossed in 12 apiece. Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) was the fifth UNW player to hit double-digits, as the junior scored 10 points, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Northwestern dominated in the paint, outscoring Crown 58-32, while also holding a distinct 47-17 advantage in bench points. The Eagles, who led by as many as 42 in the second half, committed a season-low four turnovers.

Austin VanDerHeyden tallied 21 points for Crown to lead all scorers.

The Eagles will turn around and host Minnesota Morris Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the Ericksen Center.
