ST. PAUL –
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) drilled a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in the game to help the University of Northwestern men's basketball team remain perfect on the young season (5-0), as the Eagles topped Macalester College (2-3), 64-61, in a thrilling non-conference game inside the Leonard Center Tuesday night. The 5-0 start to the 2015-16 campaign is tied for the second-best start in program history.
Trailing by three at the break, the Eagles battled back in the final 20 minutes of play, outscoring the Scots 36-30 to secure the victory.
Clay Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) dropped 11 of his 16 points in the second half to lead the second-half charge. In a back-and-forth second half that went down to the wire, Sprenger connected from downtown with just over a second remaining to lift the Eagles to the three-point victory.
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) matched Elrod's 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Sprenger, who was the hero Tuesday night, was the third UNW player to reach double figures, finishing the game with 10 points. UNW shot 46.6 percent from field in the win, while the Eagles bench outscored the Scots 18-11.
Michael Gutierrez scored a game-high 17 points for MAC.
UNW will be off until next Tuesday when they travel down Snelling to face rival Bethel University. Tip between the two undefeated foes is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Robertson Center.
