ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern football team has arrived in the Lone Star State in preparation for Saturday's National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. UNW will meet Southwest Assemblies of God University for the first time in program history Saturday inside Lumpkins Stadium (9,500) in Waxahachie, Texas. Kickoff is slated for 12 noon.
Northwestern FileThe Eagles finished the regular season with an 8-2 overall record and 8-1 mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) has made headlines as of late, as the linebacker was named the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week the final two weeks of the season. In addition, he was selected as the NCCAA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in UNW's win over Eureka. He has recorded double-digit tackle totals in his last four games.
A Look at the OpponentSAGU, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), finished the regular season 7-3. Sophomore quarterback CJ Collins has thrown for over 2,200 yards and has accounted for 24 touchdowns this season. Jeremiah Maat has posted a team-high 71 tackles this season, while Shakeem Taylor and Deonte Morrison each have five picks.
Victory Bowl CentralThis is the seventh Victory Bowl appearance for UNW and first-ever for SAGU. The Eagles, who were Victory Bowl champions in 2000 and 2008, last appeared in the game in 2012. The bowl is sponsored and put on by the NCCAA. The NCCAA is constructed of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA institutions.
