Eagles Use Pair of Second Half Goals to Defeat Martin Luther

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals en route to knocking off visiting Martin Luther, 3-1, Thursday night at Reynolds Field. With the win, the Eagles move their record to 7-3.

Martin Luther struck first, as Martha Balge scored on a breakaway 24 minutes into the contest to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage. Just over two minutes later, Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) answered with the equalizer to knot the score at 1-1 apiece. It was the first goal of the season for the UNW sophomore.

After heading into the half tied at 1-1, Abbey Lamfers (Richfield, Minn./Edina High Scool) put Northwestern in front after she converted on a penalty kick in the 69'. Brynn Denniston (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) then added a goal – her third of the season – with under 10 minutes to play to secure the win for the Eagles. Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) assisted on Denniston's goal.

Northwestern dominated in its offensive end, outshooting Martin Luther 31-8 in the contest. Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) fired six shots, while Megan Larsen (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) and Skarin added four each. Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) put three shots on goal. Josie Monson (Albertville, Minn./Homeschool) continued to be impressive in goal, as the freshman grabbed four saves.

The Eagles will travel to Mankato for a 4:15 p.m. contest with Bethany Lutheran on Saturday. The Vikings are currently sitting atop the UMAC standings, while the Eagles are in second.

Note: The game was played as a non-conference match, as the two teams played their conference match last Saturday in New Ulm.
