MORRIS, Minn.— The University of Minnesota Morris ended the University of Northwestern's sixth consecutive winning streak with a 62-47 victory over the Eagles. With an early first half start, the Cougars built on their momentum enjoying a home court win Saturday night, becoming the only undefeated women's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference team standing.
A quiet three minutes started, as UMM's Tori Holt put the first two points on the board at 17:10 for the game. Things began to pick up for the Cougars as they quickly earned a nine point advantage just under six minutes into the period. Five points added by
Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove), kept Northwestern on the board, putting the score at 12-8. Madson continued to add momentum in the visitor's favor with a three pointer with 7:08 on the clock, bringing the deficit to a mere three points. With two minutes remaining, Minnesota Morris claimed a ten point advantage, their highest of the half, leading to a halftime score of 27-17.
Five minutes into the half, Head Coach
Aaron Kahl called a timeout on the court, as the visiting team trailed 39-23.
Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) responded a minute later with a shot from behind the arc. Five additional points by Madson brought the Cougars' lead down to eight with 12:33 on the board.
Jacki Smith (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) drained a three and Madson continued to capitalize on shots, trying to set the tone for a comeback, but the Eagles were struggling to fill the gap. With time running out, Northwestern fell 62-47.
Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) stole the show with 20 points for the Eagles, the only player on the visiting squad to reach double digits. Smith led with three blocks and nine rebounds, with
Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) just behind with eight rebounds herself. UMM's Tori Holt led with 17 points, closely followed by Kendra Wycoff with 16. Morris scored 17 points off of Eagle turnovers.
The Eagles (10-8, 6-1 UMAC) will face North Central University Tuesday night at 5:30p.m. in Minneapolis. Northwestern will travel to southwest Minnesota to take on Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College next weekend for more conference play.
