MORRIS, Minn.— The University of Northwestern Eagles were too much for the University of Minnesota Morris as the Cougars were defeated 74-54 Saturday night. With a double digit lead for a majority of the game, UNW came out shooting strong and will remain undefeated in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
Minnesota Morris came out with a quick five point lead, but the Eagles were ready for the fight.
Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) made two consecutive threes in the fifth minute, putting Northwestern up nine points.
Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) brought UNW to a double-digit lead at 14:31 with his shot from behind the arc. The Cougars put up a fight as they trailed 19-13 with 11 minutes to go in the first half. It wasn't until the 16th minute that Morris brought UNW's lead down to four, but the Purple and Gold still held the lead at halftime with a score of 29-25.
UMM's CD Douglas tied the game up at 29 a minute into the second half. Two minutes passed before the next basket was made by Douglas, as he reclaimed the lead for the Cougars at 17:29.
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle)'s trey put UNW back in the game as his squad continued to take back the large point advantage over Minnesota Morris. Carney's three-pointer at 8:33 ignited the Eagles' 12 point advantage, forcing a home team timeout. With two shots from downtown, Carney and
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) continued to capitalize from behind the arc with five minutes left in the game. UMM couldn't stop the Eagles as they trailed 61-49 with just under five minutes remaining and Northwestern wasn't ready to let up as they finished with a 20 point advantage in the 74-54 victory.
Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led the squad with 21 points, with
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle),
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School), and
Caleb Janson (Pierz, Minnesota/Pierz Healy) all joining him in the double-digit club. Shooting 50 percent for FGs and 40 for threes, the Eagles out-shot Morris' FG percentage of 38.9 and 17.6 percent for 3FGs. Neil Helgeson and CD Douglas led the home team with 11 points apiece.
The Eagles (9-9, 7-0 UMAC) will face North Central University Tuesday night at 7:30p.m. in Minneapolis. Northwestern will travel to southwest Minnesota to take on Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College next weekend for more conference play.
