Box Score ST. PAUL – In a highly anticipated home opener, the University of Northwestern lost 1-0 to Augustana College (Ill.) at Reynolds Field Friday night. The Eagles couldn't quite pull ahead regardless of the energetic stadium and close match-up.
The scoreboard looked quiet in the first half with zero goals from either team; however, with multiple yellow cards, both teams contributed to an intense match-up. By the end of the first half, Northwestern tallied three more saves than the Vikings, but were out-worked on offense by Augustana's five more shots on goal.
The second half heated up in the 66th minute when Nathan Kyes made a hard shot in the upper left of the goal to put the Vikings up 1-0. In his first full game of the season, senior goalkeeper
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) made seven saves for the Eagles this evening. With a free kick in the last eight seconds,
Sam Diatta (Ziguinchor, Senegal/St. Paul Central) made a hard shot from 30 yards back ending in a great save by Vikings goalkeeper Brett Johnson, securing the Augustana win.
Northwestern (0-4) will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play as they host Northland College on September 19 at 4:15 p.m. and again on the 20th against St. Scholastica at 2:15 p.m.
