MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team came up short in its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship match, losing to top seed College of St. Scholastica 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. The loss concludes the Eagles' 2014 season with an 11-15 record.
Match ResultsOnly UNW's No. 1 pair consisting of
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim were able to score points against their opponent in doubles play in an 8-3 loss to Josh Stainer and James Mack. Northwestern's Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams of
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery), and
Cole Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and
Chris Carlberg (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) were both defeated 8-0.
Ekman and Gudim both put up a fight in their Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches, but the remaining four contests in singles play easily went to the Saints. Stainer handed Ekman a 6-1, 6-3 loss, while Gudim was defeated by Mack 6-2, 6-3.
The UMAC Tournament title was St. Scholastica's 14th in program history.
