Eagles advance to UMAC Tournament championship after 9-0 win over Knights

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team advanced to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship game with a 9-0 victory over No. 4 seed Martin Luther College on Friday night at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Eagles will face second seeded College of St. Scholastica at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Match Results

Northwestern set the tone with a trio of 8-0 sweeps in doubles action to earn an early 3-0 lead over the Knights. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ), who played together in the No. 1 doubles match for the second straight contest, kept the momentum going in singles play with nearly identical 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 victories. Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) also earned a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

UNW yielded a few more games in the Nos. 4-6 singles matches but still left the arena without giving up a set on the night.

Northwestern's tournament championship match against the Saints from St. Scholastica on Saturday will be a rubber match between the two squads after the Eagles and CSS each won on their home courts during the regular season to share the conference title.
