MINNEAPOLIS – The Northwestern men's tennis team will get some needed rest before taking on the College of St. Scholastica in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship at 12:30 p.m. on Satuday. The Eagles earned a ticket to Saturday's action after defeating Bethany Lutheran College 8-1 in the tournament's semifinal round on Friday in a match that ended shortly before 11:30 p.m.
Match ResultsNorthwestern improved upon its two previous 7-2 scores against the Vikings during the 2014 regular season. The Eagles' only gave up a point in the No. 3 doubles match, which went into extra time in a 9-7 finish that went Bethany Lutheran's way. UNW had a firm grip on the other two doubles contests though, with
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim defeating Jacob Kubler and Ryan Koch 8-2 in the No. 1 singles match and
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) beating Jason Buechler and Troy Hoyord by the same score.
Leading 2-1 after doubles action, Northwestern took all six of the singles points that were up for grabs. Gudim earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Koch in the No. 2 match, while
Chris Carlberg (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) defeated Paul Riediger 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Cole Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) went the distance in his No. 5 contest against Zach Carlson, winning 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7).
The Eagles will have their hands full with Saturday's championship bout at the Baseline Tennis Center as St. Scholastica has handily won both regular season contests against Northwestern. The Saints handed Martin Luther College a 9-0 loss on adjacent courts to the UNW-Bethany Lutheran match.
