MINNEAPOLIS – The Northwestern men's tennis wrapped up the regular season portion of its 2014 schedule with a decisive 9-0 win over North Central University (Minn.) on Tuesday night. Though the Rams are a fellow Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) team, the match was considered a nonconference contest.
Full match scores from the Baseline Tennis Center were not immediately available.
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim started the doubles round off with a solid 8-2 win over Fabian Turnberg and Shane Christianson, while the Eagles' No. 3 doubles pair of
Chris Carlberg (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and
Nathan Elias (St. Anthony Village, Minn. /St. Anthony) were good for an 8-2 finish over the Rams' Jordan Harrell and Chris Karrow.
Ekman led singles play in the same way he and Gudim kicked off doubles. Ekman defeated Turnberg 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match. Five of the six singles matches were played in the typical two-set fashion. However,
Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery)'s No. 4 singles match against Josh Lee was cut to an eight-game pro set, where Busse took care of business, winning 8-1.
Northwestern now looks ahead to Friday night's semifinal round of the UMAC Tournament, where the No. 2 seeded Eagles will face Bethany Lutheran College at approximately 8:30 p.m. That match will be in a familiar venue as the full conference playoff bracket is hosted at the Baseline Tennis Center.
