Wins over UW-River Falls & North Central are Eagles' sixth and seventh straight

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team won the first match of its Tuesday doubleheader, starting the day with a 9-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls before returning to the friendly confines of LIfetime Fitness in Fridley to easily sweep North Central University 9-0. UNW has now won seven straight matches.

Northwestern-UW-River Falls Match Results

While UNW swept all three doubles matches, two of the victories were rather convincing. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) paired up once again to defeat the Falcons' Kelsey Hochberger and Kelly Mendel 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match, while Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) and Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) gave Northwestern another victory as they swept River Falls' Hannah Klimek and Kayla Rosenow 8-0 at the No. 2 slot. UNW's No. 3 doubles team of Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) won their match 8-4.

Moe had a standout performance against Mendel in the No. 2 singles match as the Northwestern freshman swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) was good for a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 singles bout, while Gallaway took care of business against Lea Zuern at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Northwestern-North Central Match Results

Northwestern hardly had difficulty handling North Central in the night cap, losing just one game throughout the three doubles matches and six singles contests that were played. All three doubles bouts went 8-0 in the Eagles' favor. Mary Matzger was the lone Ram to get a game in her 6-1, 6-0 loss to UNW's Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) in the No. 4 singles match.

The Eagles are back on the court on Thursday of this week when they head south to face Martin Luther College in continued UMAC action.
