Men's Tennis takes two in Friday UMAC doubleheader

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Northwestern men's tennis team won its second and third consecutive matches on Friday, defeating both the University of Minnesota Morris and Bethany Lutheran College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action at Lifetime Fitness. The victories improve the Eagles' season record to 4-10.

Northwestern-Minnesota Morris Results

Against the Cougars from Minnesota Morris, Northwestern didn't surrender any games in the three doubles matches as all of UNW's pairs swept their contests. In singles play, the Eagles' No. 1 player in Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) set the tone for the rest of the squad with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Cougars' Dakota Frazier. Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) also netted a nice victory in the No. 5 singles match as he defeated his opponent, Kevin Cunningham, 6-0, 6-1 to help account for the Purple and Gold's 9-0 victory against Morris.

Northwestern-Bethany Lutheran Results

Many of the results in Northwestern's second match of the day were similar to that of the first with a few hiccups along the way in a 7-2 win over the Vikings. The Grasto brothers – Trevor and Cole – squeaked out a 9-8 (7-4) No. 3 doubles victory over BLC's Zach Carlson and Paul Riediger to help the Eagles win all three doubles matches.

In singles play, Ekman again had a solid 6-1, 6-1 finish against the Vikings' Jacob Kubler in the No. 1 match, while UNW's No. 2 singles player, Phil Gudim, knocked off Ryan Koch 6-2, 6-0.

Northwestern is scheduled to play two matches on the north side of the Twin Cities next week against North Central University and Saint Mary's University, both at Lifetime Fitness in Fridley. The Eagles and North Central are slated to square off at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, less than 24 hours before UNW will host Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. on Wednesday the 9th.
