FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Northwestern men's tennis team wrapped up its 10-game league schedule on Tuesday with a rather easy 9-0 win over the University of Minnesota Morris at Lifetime Fitness. All but one of the nine matches played – three doubles and six singles – ended with the Eagles allowing two games or less.
Match ResultsNorthwestern's dominance in the doubles matches started that theme as the No. 1 duo of
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim defeated their opponents Dakota Fracizer and Matthew Fischback 8-1. UNW's No.2 doubles team of
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) did even better as they beat Morris' Kevin Cunningham and Erik Vergiels 8-0. The Eagles received a free point at No. 3 doubles as the Cougars were forced to forfeit that contest.
Ekman kept the momentum going in his No. 1 singles match as he handed Frazier a 6-1, 6-1 loss. Gudim and Mila were both good for wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles as well, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 before
Cole Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 4 singles in an eight-game pro set.
Chris Carlberg (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) then rounded out the afternoon with an 8-0 win against Cunningham in the No. 5 match.
Northwestern, now 9-13 overall and 8-2 in UMAC play, has secured the No. 2 seed in this weekend's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament. The Eagles will face fellow UMAC member North Central University (Minn.) on Thursday, May 1 in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference match at Baseline Tennis Center before UNW faces third-seed Bethany Lutheran College in an 8:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday, May 2 at the same location.
