Eagles can't finish comeback at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) eight-match winning streak came to an end on Saturday as the Eagles were on the losing side of a 6-3 score against the College of St. Scholastica in the league's Game of the Week. After losing all three doubles matches, the Eagles dealt themselves a tough road to come back and were only able to take three of the six singles contests.

Match Results

Both Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) were victorious for UNW in the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches. Johnson defeated Madeleine Scanlan 6-3, 6-4 while Moe took care of Alexis Gunderson 6-2, 6-4. Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) was good for a win at No. 6 singles as well as she defeated St. Scholastica's Kelsey Geiger 6-0, 6-4.

Northwestern had a chance to get to five points down the stretch in singles play, but Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) each lost in a close third set tiebreaker. Johnson's No. 3 match versus Jessica Solberg finished with the St. Scholastica player winning 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (12-10), while Matetich's loss against Alek Ochrymowicz was 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). UNW led early in both matches but ultimately couldn't hang on.

Now 16-6 overall (8-1 UMAC), Northwestern will regroup before wrapping up conference play with a 4 p.m. match at the University of Minnesota Morris on Tuesday, April 29.
