FRIDLEY, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team kept its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record unbeaten on Wednesday with a 9-0 defeat of Martin Luther College at Lifetime Fitness.
Match ResultsNone of the nine matches that took place – three doubles and six singles – had a strong chance to go the Knights' way as UNW was dominant throughout the afternoon. Without
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) in the lineup, Eagles head coach
Matt Swigart paired
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) together at No. 1 singles, where they were successful by an 8-1 count against Martin Luther's Jacqueline Keller and Carissa Kock. So too was UNW's No. 2 doubles team of
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) in their 8-0 win over Charis Goelzer and Mateja Epple.
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Courtney Lawlor (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) then wrapped up doubles action with an 8-3 victory versus the Knights' Melissa Stibb and Elizabeth Broring.
Four of Northwestern's six singles players won at least one of their two sets in 6-0 fashion. Both Moe and Matetich won their Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches 6-0, 6-1, while Bostrom defeated Goelzer 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 bout.
Moe's singles victory was her 16th of the year, setting a new program record for singles wins in a season. Four different Northwestern players were tied atop the record books with a previous top mark of 15 wins in one year, including current No. 1 singles player,
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing). Moe has a chance to be the first Eagles player to ever reach 20 victories in a single campaign.
Now 15-5 overall, Northwestern is scheduled to finish its UMAC slate by the weekend with matches against the University of Minnesota Morris, Bethany Lutheran College and the College of St. Scholastica all penciled in the next four days. The Eagles are supposed to travel west to Morris for a 3 p.m. contest on Wednesday, April 23, although the threat of rain may temporarily put that match on hold. -- Update: Northwestern's match against Minnesota Morris has been postponed to Tuesday, May 28 at 3 p.m. in Morris, Minn.
