Men's Tennis returns to action with 6-3 defeat over Knights

FRIDLEY, Minn. --  After not having played for 10 days, the University of Northwestern men's tennis team was back on the court on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles won their sixth straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) match with a 6-3 victory over Martin Luther College at Lifetime Fitness.

Match Results

All three of the doubles matches finished with 8-4 scores, but only the Nos. 1 and 2 contests went in Northwestern's favor. Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim were successful in their No. 1 doubles match, while the combination of Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) and Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) combined for a No. 2 victory.

Ekman was victorious in his No. 1 singles contest, defeating Jordan Bence 6-3, 6-1, while both Gudim and Busse were good for wins at Nos. 2 and 3, winning 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0. While the Eagles lost points at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, Cole Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) picked up UNW's final point with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 slot against Philip Schroeder.

Now 7-12 overall (6-1 UMAC), Northwestern is scheduled for three more UMAC contests in the next four days. Whether Wednesday's scheduled bout against the University of Minnesota Morris will happen or not will wait to be determined in the early morning as rain is threatening the western Minnesota area. If it does go on, warm-ups will start at 3 p.m. in Morris, Minn.
