MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team earned its second victory of the young 2014 season in as many chances in a 6-3 defeat of Bethel University. Beginning the match at 8:30 a.m., the Eagles started out with a 2-1 lead after doubles play before taking four of the six singles matches.

UNW's No. 1 doubles team of
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) set the tone for the day with their 8-4 win over Bethel's Abby Edin and Abby Kreklau, with
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) and Tina Matetch picking up an 8-3 victory in their No. 2 doubles match against Kourtney Jakubic and Amanda Johnson.
Both of Northwestern's Johnsons won their singles bouts in super tiebreakers.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) won her first set against Edin 6-3 before falling in the second set 6-4. Johnson emerged victorious from the abbreviated third set, winning 10-6 to take the Eagles' first singles point.
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) used a 7-6 (7-4) comeback in Set 2 after losing the first round to Amanda Johnson 7-5 to setup Kelly's 10-6 tiebreaker point to take the No. 3 singles match.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) had little difficulty handling the Royals' Kristin Vivan in the No. 2 singles match (6-1, 6-0), while Matetich posted a nice comeback at No. 4, defeating Kreklau 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9).
Now 2-0 on the year, Northwestern's next opponent will be the Eagles' third straight against a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) member institution as UNW squares off against St. Catherine University on Saturday, Feb. 22.
