DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern women's track and field team partook in Saturday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday at the College of St. Scholastica. The Eagles returned home with one individual victory followed by a host of top five finishes on the day.

Freshman
Jordan Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo ) continued her outstanding rookie season with both a individual championship and a personal best in the 60 meter dash. Skarin ran her top collegiate time of 8.20 seconds in her preliminary heat before beating the University of Minnesota Morris' Alicia Doerr by one one-hundreth of a second in the finals at 8.21 seconds to earn the medal. Skarin also competed in the 200 meter dash, placing second in that event with another personal best time of 27.26 seconds.
Emily Howe (Des Moines, Iowa/) ran for Northwestern in the 60 meter hurdles race, crossing the finish line in 10.32 seconds, a time that placed fifth overall. Howe and Skarin ran the third and fourth legs of the Eagles' 4x200 meter relay team that placed third.
Ariel Andrews (Yuma, Colo. /Yuma) took fourth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:53.26, beating seven other competitors in the longest race of the day.
Both
Samantha Barker (Frazee, Minn./Frazee) and
Karina Nordrum (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) earned places on their respective podiums in the field events. Barker's 9.57 meter triple jump distance was good for third place, while Nordrum took second on the weight throw with a distance of 14.21 meters and third in the shot put, hurling the ball 11.63 meters. Nordrum's weight throw was a season best.
As a team, Northwestern placed third with 56 points. St. Scholastica won the meet with 274 points, followed by 119 points from Minnesota Morris. Bethany Lutheran College took fourth at 28 points.
Despite the full squad indoor season winding down after the conference championship meet, individuals will still participate in future upcoming meets to make an attempt at earning a place in the NCAA Championship. The first individual opportunity will be on Friday, Feb. 28 at the St. Olaf College Ole Open Qualifier in Northfield, Minn., where events begin at 4 p.m.
