FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Northwestern men's tennis team played its second match of the 2014 season on Friday night, losing a 9-0 final score to Hamline University. The loss drops the Eagles to 2-0 on the young year.
Match Results
Northwestern gave the Pipers a run in doubles play as
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Phil Gudim were on the short side of a 9-7 match against Hamline's Dylan Sperry and Sam Peterson in the No. 1 match.
Trevor Grasto (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) and
Chris Carlberg (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) also had a good showing for the Eagles in the NO. 3 doubles match, but fell short in an 8-5 final against Brandon Kuether and John Banovetz.
Grasto took Kuether to a third set super tiebreaker in his No. 5 singles match before ultimately losing 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7). That's as close as Northwestern would come to a singles victory on the night. Phil Gudim lost his No. 2 match to Derek Lutz 6-3, 6-3, but recorded the most points behind Grasto's three-setter.
The Eagles have one more match on their 2014 schedule before heading south for the team's annual spring break trip to a warmer climate. UNW is slated to square off against Macalester College on Saturday, March 1 at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn.
