ST. PAUL— Repeating history to their game earlier this season, the University of Northwestern's women's basketball lost 66-55 to Hamline University Monday night at the Ericksen Center. Hoping to reclaim the victory from their overtime loss to the Hamline previously this year, the Eagles couldn't recover in their second match-up against the Pipers as they battled in a continuous deficit all night.
Six minutes into the game,
Aaron Kahl called a timeout for the Eagles as they trailed 5-13 to the Pipers. The head coach's pep talk worked for UNW as they narrowed the margin to three, bringing the score to 12-15 with 12:03 on the board. Hamline continued to make a strong offensive push with four consecutive baskets launching the score to 14-28 with seven minutes left on the clock.
Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) paused their momentum with a good layup, followed by a pair of good free throws by
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian). Stubbs added the second Eagle trey of the game with just under five minutes remaining putting the Eagles at 21-30 behind the visitors.
Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Osseo) made one of two points behind the charity line as the Eagles trailed 26-37 with just over one minute on the clock. With three seconds left,
Jacki Smith (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) attempted a shot behind the arc, but Hamline's top player Jordan Sammons came in with a solid block ending the first session of the game.
The Pipers came out strong in the second period as they continued to hold the lead at 30-45, until Campbell's pair of points behind the charity stripe put two points on the board with 15:57 on the clock. Failing to keep up with their aggressive offensive push, the Eagles margin fell to 12 points. Stubbs and Campbell added two layups for UNW only to see the visitors respond with four points of their own. Hamline wasn't letting up steam as they took a 15 point lead at 12:08. With a few quiet minutes on the court, Smith finally responded for Northwestern with a three-pointer with just under seven minutes left in the game putting the Eagles at 46-60. Soon after, Chanel Madsen contributed her first three of the night adding momentum with 5:42 showing on the clock just before an Eagle timeout was called on the floor. With six missed shots to follow, UNW struggled to capitalize in the paint leading to a 55-77 loss to Hamline.
Jordan Sammons, currently fourth in all-time scoring with the Pipers, leads her team in points this season with 305, thanks to her 26 tonight. Alex Peterson also earned 16 points for Hamline, with both teammates earning a double-double.
The Eagles' sophomore
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led the pack with 13 points, followed by Campbell (12) and Smith (10). Low shot percentages contributed to the loss with a 33.3 field goal percentage and 27 percent from behind the arc. However, Hamline wasn't much better with 38.2 percent for their field goals and a low 15.8 percent for threes.
Northwestern (4-3) has only one day of practice before the Eagles play again. Wednesday's contest will take place at St. Catherine University at 7 p.m. before UNW will hit the road on Saturday to play Luther College at 2 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
