ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team claimed the victory over Northland College 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
28 minutes passed without a goal from either team. However, Northwestern's
David Mooers (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) put the Eagles on the board at 28:55 with an assist by Mateusz Grainski.
Sean Denniston (Hartland, Wis. /Arrowhead) added a point to the scoreboard in the 33rd minute, assisted by
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield). Two minutes later freshman
Andres Almarza (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Christian) notched in the third goal of the afternoon, putting UNW up 3-0 going into halftime.
The Lumberjacks took a while to respond to the visitors' momentum in the first half. However, Zeke Yslas contributed to the scoreboard with Northland's solo goal of the afternoon, assisted by Thomas Jansen in the 78th minute. With time running out, Northwestern's early lead proved to be successful and walked away with the conference victory.
Defensively,
Jordan Salm (Cleveland, Wis./Sheboygan North) took away a solo goal for Northwestern, as Northland struggled to get shots on goal. Northwestern out-shot the Lumberjacks 30-17, with 15 more shots on goal. Northland's Colton Schreyer took away a handful of saves, tallying 14 for the afternoon.
Northwestern (6-11-1 Overall, 5-5-1 UMAC) will host its last regular season home-stand next weekend at Reynolds Field before post-season begins. The Eagles will face Bethany Lutheran College on Friday at 1 p.m. and Crown College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
