Despite close game, Eagles fall to Martin Luther 3-2

Box Score

ST. PAUL – In a close conference match-up, the women's soccer team lost 3-2 to Martin Luther College Friday night at Reynolds Field. Despite their offensive push, the Eagles couldn't recover from the Knights' run of goals.

The Eagles were the first on the board thanks to a goal by Emily Goeppinger (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield), assisted by Sydney Narloch (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) in the 8th minute. With 21 minutes left in the first half Jenna Maurer tied the game with Martin Luther's first goal of the night, assisted by Hailey Johnson. Lauren Maertz added another goal for the visitors with five minutes remaining. Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to respond to their comeback going into halftime with a one point deficit.

The Eagles put themselves in a tough situation 15 minutes into the second period, giving the Knights a penalty kick. Hailey Johnson took advantage of the offensive opportunity and scored off of the kick, putting the Eagles in a deeper hole. Fortunately, Anna Hitterdal (St. Louis Park, Minn./Southwest Christian) added a goal for Northwestern in attempts to fill the point deficit with 13 minutes left in the game. Hitterdal is second in goals for this season for the Eagles as a freshman. Despite out-shooting the Knights 12-8, the Purple and Gold couldn't pull ahead resulting in a 3-2 loss to Martin Luther.

Northwestern (4-9 Overall, 4-5 UMAC) will host the University of Minnesota Morris tomorrow night at 6:15 p.m. for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week. The Eagles will play their final non-conference game on Tuesday at Bethel University at 3:30 p.m. before they hit the road to play the College of St. Scholastica and Northland College next weekend.
