Meet Results

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team won its first match of the 2014 campaign on Friday evening, defeating Hamline University 7-2 at Lifetime Fitness. UNW won all three doubles matches to head into singles play needing just two more points for the victory. The Eagles were happy to surpass that mark, dropping just two singles matches on the night en route to the win.

All three of UNW's first points came fairly easy for the Eagles, who dropped just five total games in doubles action. The junior duo of Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) picked up right where they left off in 2013, defeating the Pipers' Carissa Wallerich and Jordan Danielson 8-2. Playing in a Northwestern uniform for the first time, freshmen Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) and Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) also earned an 8-2 victory in their No. 2 doubles match, while Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) had little problem in an 8-1 No. 3 doubles win against Hamline's Lee Manthe and Elizabeth Hughes.

Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) took care of Wallerich 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Moe dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win against Hamline's Emily Butler. Like Moe, Matetich won her first collegiate singles match, defeating Cassie Rammage 7-5, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6). Gallaway finished up the night with a 6-4, 6-2 victory versus Maggie Gibson.

Northwestern will have just over a week to prepare for its next match on the 2014 calendar, an 11:30 a.m. contest against Bethel University at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus on Saturday, Feb. 8.
