UNW runs out of steam on Day 2 of Augsburg Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS – After earning its first win of the 2013 season on Friday, the University of Northwestern volleyball team played two more matches on Saturday as part of the Augsburg College Invitational. Neither match went the Eagles' way as UNW lost a three set contest to Wisconsin-Eau Claire before falling to 25th ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-0.

Northwestern was in the first two sets in the initial match of the day, sticking with the Blugolds from Eau Claire until nearly the end of each round. In Set 1, the Eagles were tied with their opponent at 22 points apiece as head coach Beth Wilmeth continued with a different lineup to accommodate early season injuries that have struck the UNW squad. Eau Claire broke the 22-22 tie with three straight points to win 25-22 before almost matching the same feat in Set 2, when the Blugolds turned a 21-all score into a 25-22 set victory. Northwestern found itself playing catch-up in the third round as its opponent led by four and five points throughout. The point differential remained until the end with Eau Claire winning the set 25-21 and taking the match 3-0.

Although the Eagles weren't able to take any of the three sets, UNW did record 18 kills in both the second and third, hitting .300 or better in both games to help the team's overall attacking percentage get to .274 for the entire match. Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had 42 assists for Northwestern as Faith Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) hit a career high 13 kills to go with a .458 personal attacking rate while Lizzy Potratz (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian ) added 11 kills.

Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) paced the Eagles defensively with 21 of the team's 53 digs.

Northwestern's legs ran out of steam in a rematch against Stevens Point after the two teams squared off a week ago at a tournament in St. Joseph, Minn. The Pointers were once again victorious with set wins of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-20.

The high .200s hitting percentage wasn't there for the Eagles this time as Northwestern committed more attacking errors than kills. Stoltz was still able to post 27 assists to keep her assists rate over 10 per set for both the weekend and the young season, earning all-tournament honors along the way.

Vander Galien led the Eagles with eight kills and a .160 hitting rate.

Now 1-7 overall, Northwestern will gladly take the few days off that the upcoming schedule presents before the Eagles play their first home match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against 19th-ranked Saint Benedict in the Ericksen Center (7 p.m. start). That match will also be a change for UNW to get revenge after the Eagles and Blazers played one another on Saint Benedict's home court on Aug. 30.
