DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 match to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, giving the Eagles the No. 2 seed in next weekend's conference tournament. The Eagles' lone win on the day came at the No. 1 singles position.
Match Results
Unlike when the Saints came to Northwestern's home court at Lifetime Fitness in Fridley on March 28, the Eagles found themselves down 3-0 to St. Scholastica after doubles play. The No. 1 pair of
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) fell to CSS's Hillary Bungarden and Alexis Gunderson 8-5 while NWC's
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) also lost in an 8-5 final to Kelli Johnson and Rachael Swiener.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) turned a corner with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bungarden in the No. 1 singles match after having lost to Bungarden in the March 28 match. Bostrom nearly took her first set against Gunderson at the No. 3 singles spot, but the familiar setting was enough for Gunderson to win 7-6 (7-1), 6-1. Northwestern's No. 5 singles player,
Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) also had a close first set before losing 7-5, 6-3.
Now 10-8 overall and 7-2 in UMAC play, Northwestern will face the University of Minnesota Morris on Monday, April 29. The location for that match has yet to be determined based on facility availability in Morris with backup courts secured in the Twin Cities.
