Else remains perfect as Women's Tennis cruises against Martin Luther

FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's tennis team improved to 7-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with a dominating 9-0 victory over Martin Luther College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles remain in the hunt for a share of the conference regular season championship and will need a win against the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon to do so.

Match Results

All three of the doubles matches that were played easily went in Northwestern's favor as the Eagles gave up just two games combined. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) took care of Jackie Keller and Carissa Kock 8-1 at No. 1 doubles while Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) teamed up to defeat Jana Spriggs and Holly Marquardt 8-1 at No. 2 at the same time. Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Aubree Else (Oskaloosa, Iowa/Pella Christian) then swept Charis Goelzer and Meja Epple 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles match.

With a 3-0 lead and momentum clearly on the Eagles' side, NWC continued to roll as singles matches started. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) didn't need much time to beat Keller 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Else continued her UMAC undefeated streak at 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Goelzer at the No. 5 spot to put Northwestern at the needed five points to win the match. With a W in the bag, the remaining singles matches were played in an eight-game pro set format as Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale), Bostrom, Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) and Karin Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) won their matches by a 32-4 combined score.

The Eagles have two matches remaining on their 2013 regular season schedule with the Saints from St. Scholastica awaiting Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. NWC will then wrap up league play with a Monday match against the University of Minnesota Morris at either Lifetime Fitness in Fridley or Lakeville, Minn., a decision that has yet to be made.
