Men's Tennis keeps pace for fifth consecutive victory

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team is on a roll. Playing in their second match in just over 24 hours, the Eagles defeated Martin Luther College 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 10-9 overall and 6-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.

Match Results

NWC picked up two wins in the doubles round, with David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) needing a little extra time to beat the longtime Martin Luther duo of Scott Henrich and Paul Koester 9-7 in the No. 1 spot. The victory was Knight and Blancke's 14th doubles win this year as the pair has yet to lose a UMAC contest in 2013.

Northwestern's Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) and Philip Gudimi also found success in their No. 2 doubles match as they overcame the Knights' Russ Scoggins and Jordan Bence 8-6.

With a 2-1 lead, Northwestern began singles play with a bang as the Eagles took all five of the Nos. 1-5 matches. Knight beat Henrich 6-2, 6-0 at No.1 while Blancke won 6-2, 6-2 against Koester as both remained perfect in UMAC singles action too. Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) was victorious in the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Scoggins while Gudim and Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) both moved up to defeat Bence and Kris Kuschel. Busse's match gave the sophomore a good lift as Kuschel won the second set 6-0 after Busse had won the first in 7-5 fashion. Busse responded quickly in the tiebreaker, winning 10-0 to take the match and hand Northwestern a 7-2 victory.

The Eagles will see Martin Luther again next Monday, April 22, but not before facing the University of Minnesota Morris this Thursday, April 18 at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
