FRIDLEY, Minn. – Tiebreakers seemed to be the theme of Northwestern College's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup against the College of St. Scholastica on Thursday. Four of the nine matches went into extra time, but the Saints left town with a 6-3 victory over the Eagles.
Match Results
NWC started its momentum with a solid 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, as
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) teamed up to defeat the St. Scholastica pair of Josh Stainer and James Mack.
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) had a promising match going on nearby, but the No. 2 doubles combination couldn't hold on as Cullen Combs and Nick Lambrecht came back to win 9-8 (7-0) in the first tiebreaker of the day. An 8-3 result in the Saints' favor at No. 3 doubles sent the team competition into singles play with St. Scholastica leading 2-1 in the race to five points.
Both Knight and Blancke's Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches went into tiebreakers. Knight came back from a second set loss to defeat Stainer 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) while Blancke also won a 10-8 super tiebreaker to give the Eagles their third point, winning 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). Unfortunately for Northwestern, that would wrap up the Purple and Gold's scoring for the day as St. Scholastica took the remaining four singles matches.
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) put up a good fight at the No. 5 spot before losing his match 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-1).
Northwestern is now 4-8 overall and an even 1-1 in UMAC action. Next up for the Eagles are back-to-back matches this Saturday against the University of Dubuque and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Eau Claire, Wis. at 12 and 3:30 p.m.
