Doubles wins not enough in Women's Tennis' 5-4 loss to Millsaps

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Northwestern College was hoping to capitalize on some momentum from a 9-0 sweep of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy from Friday in the Eagles' Monday match against Millsaps College, but NWC couldn't hold on in singles play as the Majors came from behind for a 5-4 victory.

Match Results

Northwestern started the day with two doubles victories, as the pairs of Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Aubree Else (Oskaloosa, Iowa/Pella Christian) and Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Karin Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) both beat their opponents 9-7 (7-1) and 8-0 to give the Eagles an early 2-1 lead. Millsaps started its comeback at the top of singles action though, earning three straight victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions. Gallaway earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles for Northwestern, with Else sweeping Katie Wroblewski 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. But the Eagles' couldn't get over the hump to get that deciding fifth point and had to settle for their first loss of the spring break trip.

NWC will now look ahead to its two remaining matches in the warmer weather climate on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to Minnesota on Thursday.
