HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team lost a close 5-4 decision to Cornell College on Saturday, sending the Eagles to a 1-2 record in their short time in South Carolina thus far.
Match Results
NWC was only able to pick up one doubles victory at the No. 1 slot as the combination of
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) defeated Cornell's Garrett Russikoff and Tyler Shonwiler 8-3. Knight then evened the overall match score at two points apiece with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Ashan DeSilva at No. 1 singles. Blancke found success in his singles match too, beating Russikoff 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 while
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) won his No. 5 singles match 6-4, 6-3. That would be all of Northwestern's points though, as the Rams, who had lost one match in nine tries in 2013, picked up the needed three points in the other singles contests to edge the Eagles by one.
Now 2-5 overall on the year, NWC will resume its play in Hilton Head on Monday, March 11 with a match against Millsaps College.
