Easy win over Northland gives UNW weekend sweep

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. – In a very lopsided match, the University of Northwestern swept Northland College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, improving to 18-11 overall and 11-1 in Upper Midwest Athletics Conference (UMAC) play. The 25-11, 25-11, 25-7 victory was the Eagles' seventh straight.

Northwestern hit over .350 in all three sets to finish the day with a .424 match hitting percentage, far above the -.125 rate that the LumberJills from Northland countered with. With the exception of an early 2-2 tie in the second set, Northland really never contended with the Eagles on the scoreboard. UNW was at 11 points in Set 1 before the host LumberJills were able to score two as long scoring runs in the Purple's favor was a common thread in the Northwestern win. The Eagles' longest points streak came in the second set, when kills from Hallie Mueth (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) and Kylee Thiner (Ankeny, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), along with several attack errors on Northland's side of the court, allowed Northwestern to go from a 13-7 advantage to 23-7.

Nearly everyone wearing an Eagles uniform saw court time before Northwestern boarded its bus back to St. Paul with a weekend sweep as UNW had beaten St. Scholastica 3-1 on Friday night in Duluth.

Kendra Korporal (Sumner, Iowa /Sumner-Fredericksburg) and Mueth each had nine kills to lead Northwestern, with Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Lizzy Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian ) splitting time at the setter position, combining for 29 of the Eagles' 35 assists. Korporal and Jenna Staso (Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) each had seven digs, while Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) had a hand in three of UNW's four blocks.

Northland (3-22, 1-10 UMAC) offered the Eagles a completely different perspective than Northwestern's next opponent as UNW is scheduled to host the fourth-best team in Division III (AVCA poll) and reigning national champion, St. Thomas, on Wednesday night (7 p.m. start). Northwestern will host "Purple and Gold" night on Wednesday as the Eagles partner with the Miracles of Mitch Foundation to support the fight against childhood cancer. A long list of silent auction items will be available with all proceeds, including a percentage of that night's gate receipts, going to Miracles of Mitch.
