Box Score 2 ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks on Wednesday night, falling to seventh-ranked University of St. Thomas 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-15) before dropping its second match of the day to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 21-25, 26-24).
Full box scores from Wednesday's competition were not immediately available, but
Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) had 13 digs and
Lizzy Potratz (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian ) had 10 kills against the now 15-1 Tommies, who increased their home winning streak to 18 with the win. Northwestern actually led the first set 23-20 before St. Thomas rallied for the final five points to win 25-23.
Against Eau Claire (10-7), Bertsch again led the Eagles with 18 digs with
Kendra Korporal (Sumner, Iowa /Sumner-Fredericksburg) close behind at 17. For the 10th time in 17 matches, Northwestern had a set go into overtime. Unfortunately for the Eagles, NWC was on the losing side of Set 4's 26-24 score, and the Purple and Gold returned home after the eight-mile trip with a 10-7 overall record. Eau Claire's win split the series between the two teams in 2012, with each team beating the other on one occasion.
Northwestern will look to regroup for its three UMAC matches in a 24-hour time span this weekend. The Eagles will host Martin Luther College on Friday night at 7 p.m. before welcoming Bethany Lutheran College (3 p.m.) and North Central University (Minn.) (6 p.m.) in the Ericksen Center on Saturday.
