Halvorson's two goals propel Eagles to victory

Box Score
NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's soccer team started off Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on the right foot Friday afternoon, earning a 4-0 victory over the Knights of Martin Luther College. Three Eagles scored in the win, Northwestern's first of the season.

Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) matched her 2011 goal total in Friday's game, tallying two goals for the visiting team. Halvorson scored her first goal off a Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) pass at the 5:53 mark. Just under 14 minutes later, Sarah Gerten (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) put the ball in the back net for the first time in her collegiate career, giving Northwestern a 2-0 advantage.

The Knights held Northwestern scoreless until nearly 16 minutes into the second period, when Halvorson, assisted by Francie Piche (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks), scored her second goal of the day.  NWC's offense kept rolling even until the final 50 seconds of play, as Rebekah Carrizales (Anoka, Minn./PACT Charter School) connected with Piche to solidify a 4-0 conference win for the Purple and Gold.

Overall, the Eagles outshot Martin Luther 24-15. NWC, who doubled the Knight's second half shots, posted eight corner kicks to the home team's three.

Defensively, Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) held Martin Luther scoreless in the victory, earning both her first win of this year's campaign and her first career shutout. Johnson fended off 10 Martin Luther shots on goal, including six in the last 45 minutes of play.

After Friday's road win, Northwestern (1-2) will travel to Mankato, Minn. for another UMAC matchup tomorrow, this time against Bethany Lutheran College. The Vikings earned a trip to the conference postseason tournament last year and currently own a 1-3-1 record. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
