MOBILE, Ala. -- The Northwestern College men's tennis team ended its 2012 season with a win on Thursday, defeating Central Christian College 5-1 to finish pool play at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament. The Eagles will not advance to the tournament's semifinal round.
Two of Northwestern's three doubles teams posted victories, with the No. 1 pair of
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) winning their match 8-5.
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) swept their No. 2 doubles match 8-0 before NWC's No. 3 team of
Collin Henslee (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian) and
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) being on the short side of a 9-8 score.
As has been customary in the NCCAA Tournament, not all of Wednesday's singles matches were played out to a finish. The good news is that Northwestern was on top when the match was called. Kauss defeated Dillin Lanting 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Ekman picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gunnor Kelly at No. 4 singles.
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) then wrapped things up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Grant Rardon.
NWC finishes its season with a 14-13 overall record and an 8-2 mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. The Eagles will have to say goodbye to just one senior, although that loss will be big, in Kauss, a three-year starter for Northwestern who played at both Nos. 1 and 2 singles.
