Women's Tennis falls to St. Scholastica in UMAC Tournament Championship

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Northwestern College women's tennis team ended its season at the UMAC Tournament on Saturday, losing to the College of St. Scholastica 7-2 in the championship match. The Eagles picked up one win apiece in singles and doubles play.

Northwestern's No. 2 doubles team of Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) defeated their counterparts from St. scholastica, Alexis Gunderson and Allie Carlson, 8-6, as the Eagles headed into singles play with a 2-1 deficit. Smith was NWC's lone winner in singles action, winning her No. 5 match over Megan Lawrence 7-5, 6-3. Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) came close to a victory in her No. 2 singles match before falling to Rachael Zwiener 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) also went down to the wire in her No. 4 match before losing to Cortne Solberg 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Northwestern concludes the 2012 season with a 12-13 overall record, finishing 8-2 in UMAC play. This year's total was the Eagles' second-best in program history. Only the 2008 season ended better when NWC went 14-8.
