Match Results

MINNEAPOLIS – The Northwestern College women's tennis team cooked up a 9-0 sweep over the University of Minnesota Morris in the UMAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday night, finishing the match with a cherry on top.

All three of Northwestern's doubles teams took care of business in rather quick fashion. The No. 2 doubles team of Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) finished first as they defeated Emma Strachan and Kayla Hegna 8-1. Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and Autumn Kampman (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) were also successful at No. 3 doubles, beating Morris' Virginia Godfrey and Preya Chunkapura 8-3. The Eagles' No. 1 pair of Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-4 defeat of Abby Fragodt and Christina Mollan.

Four different singles matches resulted in at least one 6-0 set in the Eagles' favor, including Knight's No. 4 singles contest, in which fans saw the NWC captain take a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Gallaway, Smith and Chelsey Fiecke (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) all earned 6-0 sets in their matches. Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) did her part at No. 2 singles as she beat Mollan 6-1, 6-3 before watching her doubles partner, Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), outlast Fragodt on the next court over. Fragodt had Johnson's number in both of their regular season face-offs, but Johnson overcame a first set loss and a tight third set tiebreaker to win 6-7, (6-8), 6-3, 1-0 (15-13).

The win evens Northwestern's overall record for the season at 12-12. The Eagles have just one more date on their schedule, which happens to be less than 12 hours after Friday's win as NWC and the College of St. Scholastica will square off for the UMAC Tournament Championship at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
