MINNEAPOLIS – The Northwestern College men's tennis team is one match away from repeating as UMAC Tournament Champions after a 9-0 sweep of Martin Luther College at the Baseline Tennis Center on Friday night.
The Eagles took care of business in each of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles pair of
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) defeated Scott Henrich and Paul Koester 8-2 while NWC's No. 2 team of
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) won their match over Ben Nommensen and William Scoggins 8-5.
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) rounded out the Eagles' doubles efforts with an 8-1 win over Nathaneal Jensen and Tom Gorzalski at No. 3.
Blancke, who won all 10 of his UMAC regular season singles matches, won his No. 3 match on Friday 6-0, 6-0 over Nommensen while Kauss earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Koester at No. 2 singles. No. 5 singles was good to
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) as well as the Eagles' rookie finished off David Marquardt 6-0, 6-1.
The win improves Northwestern's season record to 13-10 overall. Just one team stands in the Eagles' way of another UMAC Tournament title, that being the College of St. Scholastica, who beat NWC twice during the regular season. The rivals will face off on Saturday morning back at the Baseline Tennis Center with doubles action starting at 9 a.m.
