NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday and will head into this weekend's UMAC Tournament on a positive note following an 8-1 win over Martin Luther College.
Northwestern started the afternoon with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play. The No. 3 doubles team of
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Autumn Kampman (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) had the best performance in terms of score as they defeated Taylor Tomson and Carissa Kock 8-1.
Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) also picked up a doubles win for the Eagles as they beat the Knights' Leslie Klinski and Michelle Hintz 8-2 at No. 2.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) kicked off singles play with a third set tiebreaker win over Martin Luther's Rachel Niemi at No. 1, winning 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3). No. 2 singles player
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) finished with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Karina Luthra. NWC's Smith nearly swept Heidi Heckmann at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat.
Now 11-12 overall, Northwestern finishes its UMAC regular season with an 8-2 record. The Eagles will enter the UMAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, meaning NWC will face the University of Minnesota Morris in this year's new team format. Northwestern and the Cougars' start time is listed at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
