NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team finished its 2012 regular season with a convincing 9-0 victory over Martin Luther College on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles will now head into the postseason with a 12-9 overall mark and an 8-2 record in UMAC play.
NWC's No. 2 doubles team of
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) started the Eagles' sweep of doubles action as they defeated Martin Luther's Ben Nommensen and William Scoggins 8-0. Northwestern's Nos. 1 and 3 doubles teams followed suit with 8-5 and 8-4 wins.
The Eagles outlasted the Knights in two third set tiebreakers in singles matches to finish off the 9-0 team victory.
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) defeated Scott Henrich 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, followed by
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding)' 6-1, 6-0 win over Paul Koester. Gudim and
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) both overcame a 6-1 loss in their first games to win in third sets – Gudim in 11-9 fashion and Mila a 10-2 victory.
Northwestern and Martin Luther will see each other again in a few days as the two teams will match up in the new team format of the UMAC Tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis this Friday and Saturday. The second seeded Eagles will face the No. 3 Knights at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Friday's semifinal round, with the winner advancing to Saturday's 9 a.m. championship.
