DULUTH, Minn. -- Coming off two wins against the University of Minnesota-Morris and Bethany Lutheran College, the Northwestern College women's tennis team was hopeful to give the College of St. Scholastica a run for its money on Saturday, but unfortunately couldn't get the job done. The Eagles took a hard 8-1 fall to their UMAC foes in Duluth.
All three of Northwestern's doubles teams fell to their St. Scholastica opponents. Northwestern's No. 3 combo of
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Autumn Kampman (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) came the closest to a win, but were defeated in a second set tiebreaker, 9-8 (8-3).
Knight, playing at Northwestern's No. 4 singles position, was the only Eagle to earn a win on the day. Knight defeated the Saints' Cortne Solberg of St. Scholastica in a third set tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9). Three more Northwestern players fell in a third set tiebreaker.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), Northwestern's No. 1 singles player, fell 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) while Northwestern's No. 2 and No. 5
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) fell 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) and 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (12-10), respectively.
With a 10-12 overall record on the season, Northwestern will head to New Ulm, Minn. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Martin Luther at 3 p.m. The Eagles look to end their regular conference season with a win against the Knights and take that momentum on to the UMAC Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday with a 6 p.m. start time on Friday.
