MANKATO, Minn. -- Playing their second match in as many days, the Northwestern College women's team didn't have much trouble with Bethany Lutheran College, defeating the Vikings 9-0 to improve to 7-1 in UMAC play.
NWC tackled the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches with ease, as the pairings of
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge), and
Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) both won their matches 8-1. An 8-6 victory by
Autumn Kampman (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) and
Lael Sanny (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) at No. 3 doubles gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Johnson began the singles round with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bethany Lutheran's Rebecca Kopacek, with Knight earning a 6-0, 6-1 win against Alyssa Rau at No. 3 singles.
Rachel Richter (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Marta Faugstad to seal Northwestern's sweep.
Now 10-11 overall on the season, Northwestern will head north to Duluth, Minn. for a rematch against the College of St. Scholastica, who defeated the Eagles 6-3 on April 17 in Fridley. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.
